Ajeto Glassworks

Mold Shop

This unique workshop beautifully represents an overlap between organic and inorganic worlds – wood and glass. Human hands use saws, chisels and such to form birch and other types of wood logs into artistically shaped molds, which are later used by the glass-master to create artistic glass pieces.
In the ten years that the glassworks have been operational the mold shop has created thousands of molds which are all numbered and stored awaiting further use.
Wood, however, is not the only material suitable for making molds. In this workshop one may encounter numerous other processed materials such as graphite. This material has a charcoal base and is usually used for small molds with extensive detail, and can be reused in large productions due to its durability. The glassworks is furthermore capable of acquiring materials like plaster, steel, bronze or clay to use for molds. The kind of material used for the mold depends on a variety of factors. For example, the complexity of the shape, the desired texture and quality of the glass surface, the amount of pieces required to be made with one mold, and of course the price range.
